The Power Hour Checklist: How to Attack 2:00 PM – Close
Power hour is where 0DTE money is actually made — or lost. Run this 5-step checklist at 2:00 PM ET to know exactly which setup you're in and which strategy to use. Breakout? OTM lotto. Steady trend? ATM. No edge? Stay out.
Power hour is where 0DTE money is actually made — or lost. From 2:00 PM to close, gamma explodes, market makers hedge aggressively, and late institutional money flows in. Moves that take hours in the morning can happen in 15 minutes here.
But this volatility works both ways. The same conditions that create 300% gains create 100% losses just as fast.
This 5-step checklist takes 90 seconds to run at 2:00 PM ET.
Step 1 — Where Is Price vs VWAP?
VWAP remains the most important indicator even in power hour.
- Strongly above VWAP and holding: Bulls in control. Look for call continuation.
- Strongly below VWAP: Bears in control. Look for put continuation.
- Sitting right on VWAP: No edge. Do not force a trade.
Power hour trades need clear directional control. If you can't answer which side is winning in 5 seconds, don't trade.
Step 2 — Did We Break the Midday Range?
Draw a mental box around 11:30–2:00 PM price action. Ask: Has price broken out of that range?
Breakout confirmed: Highest-probability power hour setup. When price breaks midday consolidation with conviction, gamma acceleration begins and options go vertical.
No breakout: Still inside the range. Use ATM options if you trade at all. OTM lottos will decay rapidly without a catalyst.
Step 3 — Volume Expanding?
Check the 5-minute candles. Are the 2:00 PM candles bigger with rising volume?
- Volume expands with breakout: This is when 0DTE options go 100–300%. The move has institutional fuel behind it.
- Breakout on low volume: Fake move. High probability of reversal. Wait for volume confirmation before entering.
Step 4 — How Much Has It Already Moved Today?
This step prevents chasing extended moves.
- Big day already (near full ATR consumed): Power hour may stall or reverse. Use ATM options where delta gives you value even in a slow grind.
- Small day so far (under half of ATR): Room exists for a squeeze. OTM lotto options are justified here.
Step 5 — Market Context
Is SPY or QQQ supporting your direction? The biggest power hour squeezes happen when:
- The broader market is trending in the same direction
- Indices are breaking key highs or lows of the day
Fighting the overall market cuts your odds in half.
The 4 Power Hour Setups
Setup 1 — Breakout Squeeze (Most Profitable)
Conditions: Above VWAP + breaks midday high + volume expanding
Trade: OTM lotto calls (OTM strike above current price)
This is the setup that produces 200–500% returns. You're trading pure gamma acceleration as the market squeezes into the close.
Setup 2 — Breakdown Flush
Conditions: Below VWAP + breaks midday low + rising sell volume
Trade: OTM lotto puts
Late-day sell programs can cascade with shocking speed. Distribution across the market accelerates into the close.
Setup 3 — Slow Grind Continuation
Conditions: Trending all day + no explosive breakout + controlled steady movement
Trade: ATM calls or puts
You profit from intrinsic value increasing as price moves steadily in your direction. Lower risk, more consistent. The right play when momentum exists but lacks explosive volume for a squeeze.
Setup 4 — Range Hold (No Trade)
Conditions: No breakout + low volume + price stuck near VWAP
Trade: None, or iron condor if premium is attractive
Most traders lose money here by forcing directional bets with no edge. The profitable move is to stay out entirely.
Power Hour Decision Tree
- Is a breakout happening?
- Yes → OTM lotto options in breakout direction
- No → go to step 2
- Is a trend running steadily?
- Yes → ATM options in trend direction
- No → Stay out (or sell premium)
The biggest mistake in power hour: Buying OTM lottery options without breakout confirmation. OTM options need the range to break AND volume to expand. Without both, theta destroys your position in minutes.
Why This Is Different from Midday
In midday, you're positioning — buying cheap gamma before the move. In power hour, the move is either happening or it isn't. You're no longer anticipating. You're attacking confirmed direction or staying out entirely.
That mental shift is what separates traders who make money in power hour from those who give it back every day.
